Scouting Report: Derrick Walton comes in to Ann Arbor as yet another highly regarded point guard recruit under John Beilein. A four-star recruit, he is the seventh ranked point guard in the country, according to Scout.com.
Walton is a similar prospect to what Trey Burke was coming out of high school. He has a great feel for the game and has a very high basketball I.Q. He can move up and down the floor with the best of them, yet still is in control with his dribble. He is one of the best floor generals in this year’s class and is quite the distributor. Walton makes him teammates better, but he can also create offense for himself. He can take the ball to the rim and also has the ability to pull up and him the mid-range jumper, as well as shoot from long range.
Where Walton needs to improve is his strength. He is not the biggest of players, but adding bulk to his frame will help him against some of the bigger guards in the Big Ten. He has a very good jump shot, but would benefit greatly if the pull-up jumper became a consistent weapon for him.
While it could be a bit lofty to call him the next Trey Burke, he is definitely a strikingly similar prospect and should thrive in John Beilein’s system. He should take the reigns of the starting point guard job in 2013-14 rather early.
